Dehradun – In a bid to turn the city into a cleaner, plastic‑free zone, the district administration has stepped up its enforcement campaign against single‑use plastic. Under the direction of District Magistrate Dr. Ashish Chauhan, the operation now covers all 100 wards of the Municipal Corporation.
To supervise the drive, 50 sector officers have been deployed on the ground. Their teams have already carried out surprise inspections at 1,776 commercial premises across the city. As a result, 762 establishments were found to be using, storing, or selling the prohibited material.
From those, 550 businesses received challans, and the authorities collected fines amounting to ₹1.96 lakh. The raid also led to the confiscation of 532 kg of banned single‑use plastic, which has been destroyed in an environmentally‑safe manner.
Beyond Penalties: Building Community Awareness
The administration stresses that the mission is not solely about revenue collection. It aims to curb the circulation of disposable plastic and to educate residents about the ecological damage it causes. Traders and citizens alike are being briefed on sustainable alternatives and the long‑term benefits of reducing plastic waste.
Officials urge both the public and shopkeepers to stop using, storing, or selling the prohibited material and to switch to greener options. They underline that achieving a clean, plastic‑free Dehradun will require collective effort—government action alone is insufficient.
