Satna, Madhya Pradesh – Police have opened an investigation into a disturbing assault on a 19‑year‑old college student who was taken to a remote field, beaten, and filmed after she declined to befriend a specific male classmate.
The incident is said to have occurred on 6 August, but it only came to public attention more than a month later when a video of the assault began circulating on Instagram and WhatsApp. The victim then approached the Kolgawan police station to lodge a formal complaint.
How the Attack Unfolded
According to the FIR, an acquaintance invited the student to the local market under the pretext of a task. From there, the girl was whisked away on a scooter to a field where three other girls were already waiting. Once there, the four women allegedly hurled verbal abuse at her and proceeded to physically assault her.
The complaint adds that the accused were pressuring the student to establish contact with a particular boy and to maintain regular communication with him. When she refused, they beat her and forced her to apologize to the boy during a video call.
Threats, Viral Video, and Police Action
The victim claims the girls warned her that the recording would be posted publicly if she disclosed the assault to anyone. Ironically, the video later leaked and quickly went viral, prompting the student to seek police help.
Taking cognizance of the viral clip, the police registered a case on Saturday under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), invoking Sections 296(b), 115(2), 351(3) and 3(5) to address the assault, intimidation and unlawful dissemination of the video.
